Sharpton Denies Disputing Romney's Faith

Al Sharptongue in Action

(Los Angeles Times/Mark Boster)

BOSTON -- The Rev. Al Sharpton, who recently urged that radio host Don Imus be fired for making a racially insensitive remark, said in a debate that "those of us who believe in God" will defeat Republican Mitt Romney for the White House. But Sharpton denied he was questioning the Mormon's own belief in God.

Rather, the New York Democrat said he was contrasting himself with Christopher Hitchens, the atheist author he was debating at the time.

"As for the one Mormon running for office, those who really believe in God will defeat him anyways, so don't worry about that; that's a temporary situation," Sharpton said Monday during a debate with Hitchens at the New York Public Library's Beaux-Arts headquarters.

The comment was first reported Tuesday in a blog on The New York Times's Web site.

The Romney campaign, which has been wary of campaign trail criticism of Romney's faith, jumped on the Sharpton comment. If elected, Romney would be the first Mormon to serve as president.

"It is terribly disheartening and disappointing to hear Reverend Sharpton offer such appalling comments about a fellow American's faith," said Romney spokesman Kevin Madden. "America is a nation of many faiths and common values, and bigotry toward anyone because of their beliefs is unacceptable."

Romney himself said Monday during an appearance on Fox News program "Hannity and Colmes": "I think there are differences between different faiths in this country. And there will be battles between different religions. ... That's a great thing about this country. We don't decide who's going to be in office based on what church they go to."

In a tape of the debate, Sharpton can be heard defending the role of religion in the civil rights movement and shunning any suggestion that there wasn't a religious underpinning to the efforts of its leader, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

Then Sharpton spoke of Romney, although a tape reviewed by The Associated Press does not reveal why.

In a later interview with the AP, Sharpton denied questioning Romney's belief in God and suggested the Romney camp was trying to stir up a controversy because of their political differences.

"What I said was that we would defeat him, meaning as a Republican," Sharpton said. "A Mormon, by definition, believes in God. They don't believe in God the way I do, but by definition, they believe in God."

He said he was contrasting himself and other believers with Hitchens, who is the author of a new book, "God Is Not Great."

Last month, Sharpton led the calls for Imus' ouster last month after the talk show host referred to members of the Rutgers University women's basketball team as "nappy-headed hos."

Only when someone calls ME a racist do I give them a taste of their own medicine. I would never use those terms because I am very close to a lot of black people and those terms do not describe my feelings about black people. I dislike Al Sharpton but I don't view him in those terms. I think he is the creation of the standard operating format of liberal regulation - and that is the act of rewarding bad behavior.

Let's look at mexican illegals and what liberal regulation has done for them. Instead of moving to the U.S and building great lives, the Government spoils them. By allowing illegals to stay in the U.S., it immediately sets the premise and teaches that bad behavior is rewarded. No person that is willing to break the law to come here is inclined to suddenly become law abiding and proper. Al Sharpton can be added to the spoiled masses who have been rewarded for being assholes.

I don't agree with what you have stated at all. I think you should get to know some black people, buddy - I may say some rude stuff to people but I'm just pushing back - my true feelings towards my fellow Human Beings is very loving and appreciative. Regardless of race, regardless of whether gay or straight, hippie or conservative, from the U.S.A or elsewhere, just like me or totally different. The only time I dislike people is when they give me good reason to, such as the mexican community - which is one of the biggest disappointments of the last two generations. We welcome them to live with us and they show dedication and faith to mexico. I don't respect that and I will not support such action against my homeland or my lifestyle.

Anyway, I know whites and blacks have been through a lot together but we are both better people for having known each other. The United States of America would not be as great as it is if we didn't ALL influence what it is today. I wouldn't ever, ever want what blacks have added to America to ever be taken away! The music, the dance, the food, the soul, the unique perspectives, the language, the religion, the culture, the friendship - and so much more. My opinion towards Chinese influence on the United States also holds true. Many people have built this Nation.

And I don't agree with the influences that have been allowed to change the general black society that has stemmed from gangs and drugs, such as most rapp of today, violence and degradation. Rap from the old days was AWESOME!!!

Anyway, I don't share your views towards blacks and I don't view brother Al Sharptongue in those ways. I think a good enema is what Al needs, cause he's full of shit. When people stop babying him BECAUSE he's black, he will be a lot better person for it.

Wow!! You know, what you say offends me deeply because I know better than what you are saying - I have been to every state in the United States except two and I have met people from ALL walks of life and you are sadly mistaken. I would say that you have this opinion because perhaps you have had a bad experience but you include EVERYONE in your list. Do you honestly think that just because you're white that you are better than all of those people??

How can you discard what each of them offers in life? What about Chinese art? I can tell you that although our Governments do not get along, I can tell you that when I was in China I met some of the nicest, most kind, most interesting people EVER!! They have different ideas about things and they see things differently but that doesn't exile them out of Humanity! And I would hope they feel the same about me.

I can say that I appreciate so many things about so many people that your words are very sad to me. I'm not saying be weak, but I'm saying don't close yourself off to knowing more in the world. You are cheating no one but yourself with that attitude! Aren't you happy to be alive and in the same existence with so many other Human Beings??

Target?? I'm assuming that you are saying that blacks are nice to me because they like white women. Hate to tell you but some of my black FEMALE friends QUICKLY tell a black guy something if they see him with a white woman! And I know black guys who date ONLY black girls! We're all still friends! Doesn't matter! None of that has anything to do with existing together.

I wonder what you would do on a New York subway? Or in Harrisburg Pennsylvaina?? Did you ever experience the GOOD side of New Orleans??

I wish I could show you what you are missing out on! Maybe you need to get out and meet people with an open eye. Don't include everyone with the things kids do today, because they are stupid, I agree! In all races, the rapp scene has created monsters!

You can call me a fool all you want to. I have lived and I KNOW better than to deny myself the beautiful things in life that ARE my fellow Human Beings.

You make me feel sorry for you, Demon. You really do. You don't know true beauty until you see it in the eyes of the person sitting across from you.

Demon, have you ever read about other people, like in National Geographic (get the old ones because the new ones are so political they'll make you puke!) and as you read about them and look at the pictures, you say to yourself "WOW"!

Do you ever walk down the street and see kids dancing and being attention hogs and laugh at them?

Do you ever go to the park and watch people??

Do you sit close to someone you might have nothing in common with and strike up a conversation??

Do you look at people and wonder what they do everyday? Do you ask people questions about stuff you already know just to find out how they tell you about it?

What about art? Do you like art??

Have you ever thought about the people who lived before yourself and thought about what they went through on a daily basis? Who they were, what they did, what they looked like? Go to some museums and stuff!

Life is just too good to experience so little!

Eric

Sharpton (& Jackson for that matter) are nothing but race baiters. They sit around and wait for something to be said and then they are all over the news.

Jackson will find companies that have never had any problems with racial discrimination and stir up trouble. He'll get on the news with some of the "african-american' workers and complain about the discrimination. He goes away when the company settles out of court and pays him a huge sum of money. The workers go back to work and the only thing that has changed is Jesse is richer! What a racket!!

Why can't the black community (and America) see this?

Actually, a lot of them do and they don't appreciate being used as tools in the big "popularity" agenda. I think the black community is just as victimized by these things as anyone else and they full well know it. Many who COULD benefit from a REAL Al Sharpton lose out because he has no true agenda FOR his people.

Racism happens, biases occur, there truly are injustices out there - why isn't Al doing the Good Deed instead of being selfish? Why isn't he helping his people who TRULY need it?

Not glorious, glam or financially beneficial always doing the right thing - ask any preacher!

What a disappointment in my opinion that someone who has so much pull, such as Al Sharpton is not being true to doing the right thing for blacks everywhere. I think he's right on the money with Obama. The guy ISN'T traditional black American, he should never be portrayed as being black and he sure as hell should not be representing the black American People! I whole heartedly support Obama getting off the backs of black America!

On another topic - I have recently been told that my appreciation of blacks is not what it should be. My love of my darker skinned, fellow Americans doesn't fit the "norm" with the anti-racist crowd. Apparently BECAUSE I say "blacks" - I'm not really expressing a true "anti-racist" attitude - or rather not setting a very good example. SORRY!!!! I'm sorry that I don't say "African-American". I'm German decent - do I call myself German-American?? No! I'm a honky from Ohio and I am WHITE! Call me "PEACH", call me "WHITE", call me "TAN" or "APRICOT" - I'm down with all that! I don't give a damn....am I REALLY any one of these colors? No! Does it make me any less of a person?? No! JUST because someone is from Africa DOESN'T mean they are black!

If you go on thinking that people will EVER stop noticing even slight differences about each other you are living in a dream world! I hope with every cell in my body that we are never so much the same that there are no more differences. What a sad, sad world!

There are groups, segments of the U.S population out there that are different from me which have collective characteristics which are indicative to their heritage and I will not deny them that just because the social teabags of the day say that we can't appreciate the differences or that those differences can only be appreciated in certain ways. I am free to love, honor and appreciate whatever I want about people - and so shall I!

XOXOXO

~Samantha
